One litter a year, sometimes none

With us those numbers are already public. On the page of our females you will find the microchip and studbook number of every brood bitch, in plain sight. Anyone can take that data and check on the ENCI website who owns the dog, who bred it and what its pedigree says — without asking us anything. Alongside those numbers you will find the genetic test reports as PDFs, downloadable by anyone, with the dog's name and microchip readable. Puppies are placed with an ENCI pedigree, the document recognised by the FCI across all member countries.

At the Kennel: Health comes first

Each dog is followed by trusted veterinarians, with regular checkups and genetic tests. We prefer few litters, followed with care, to guarantee quality and well-being.

Which tests we do, and what they are

All breeding dogs are tested for L2HGA and HC (HSF4); the breeding females also for DM-SOD1. The reports, with the microchip number, are published on each dog's page.

L2HGA
L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria

A neurological disease that usually appears in the first years of life: tremors, unsteady gait, seizures. There is no cure.

HC (HSF4 gene)
Hereditary cataract

The lens of the eye turns cloudy at a young age, often within the first two or three years, leading to blindness.

DM-SOD1
Degenerative myelopathy

A disease of the spinal cord that appears after eight years of age and slowly leads to paralysis of the hind legs. There is no cure.

Tested: the breeding females

All three are recessive diseases, established with a DNA test that is done once and lasts a lifetime: two clear parents cannot produce affected puppies. How to read the reports is explained in the genetic testing guide.

FAQ about Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier dangerous?
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is on no list of dangerous breeds in Italy: the register of at-risk breeds was abolished in 2009, moving responsibility from the breed to the owner. A Royal Veterinary College study published in 2020, covering more than 22,000 dogs, found no significant difference in aggression attributable to the breed. Towards people the standard describes a reliable dog, and the selection of temperament decides almost everything. The trait worth knowing about is different: being a terrier, it can show reactivity towards other dogs, most often of the same sex in adulthood. It remains a powerful dog for its size and deserves to be handled accordingly.
Is the Staffy good with children?
First, something that applies to every breed: no dog should be left alone with a small child, and adult supervision is not optional. That said, this is a dog built for family life, and the English nickname "nanny dog" comes from the tolerance it shows around children — but a nickname describes temperament, it does not confer an ability to supervise. What makes the difference is the selection of the parents, the first eight weeks, and the rules a family sets at home: a place where the dog is never disturbed, short interactions, and an adult in the room.
What genetic tests do you perform?
All breeding dogs at Del Piccolo Diavolo are tested for L2-HGA, L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria, a neurological disease, and for HC, juvenile hereditary cataract (HSF4 gene). Our active breeding females are also tested for degenerative myelopathy (SOD1 gene), a disease of the spinal cord that appears after eight years of age. All are DNA tests, and all three diseases are recessive: two clear parents cannot produce affected puppies, and L2-HGA and HC carriers are not bred here. The laboratory reports are published on this site and can be downloaded, with the dog's microchip number in plain sight — that number is what makes a report verifiable, because without it it could refer to any dog at all.
Can I visit the kennel?
Yes, and it is the right way to get to know us. Del Piccolo Diavolo is in Ostellato, in the province of Ferrara, and receives by appointment only, so we can give you the time you need without stressing the dogs. During the visit you meet the adult dogs and the mother of the litter, see where the puppies are born and raised, and can check pedigrees and test reports in person. It is also when we ask you a few questions about the dog's future day. Anyone taking one of our puppies comes here: we do not ship dogs.
