How to Choose a Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breeder

The criteria that matter, and the ones that do not

Choosing where to buy your Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy is the most important decision you will make. A puppy will be with you for 12 to 14 years: it is worth spending time on the search.

This guide sets out exactly what to look for, which questions to ask and which warning signs to recognise.

Genetic tests: not negotiable

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier can carry two serious genetic diseases:

  • L2HGA (L-2-Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria): a neurological disease
  • HC (Hereditary Cataract): leads to blindness

A serious breeder tests every single breeding dog and can show you the certificates. If the breeder does not know what L2HGA and HC are, walk away.

Puppies must be clear, or the product of matings that guarantee healthy offspring — clear to carrier is acceptable, carrier to carrier never is.

ENCI pedigree: proof of breed

The pedigree is not an optional extra or an added cost. It is the only document certifying that the dog is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Without a pedigree:

  • You do not know who the real parents are
  • You cannot verify the genetic tests
  • You have no guarantee about the selection
  • You cannot enter shows

Be wary of anyone selling "Staffies without papers at a reduced price". The pedigree costs the breeder around 30 euros: if they skip it, there is a reason.

Visiting the kennel: essential

A serious breeder invites you to visit. You need to see:

  • Where the dogs live — in the house, not in isolated pens
  • The mother of the puppies, and ideally the father
  • How the dogs interact with the breeder
  • The hygiene conditions
  • The original documents, not photocopies

If the breeder suggests meeting you "at a motorway services" or shipping the puppy, that is a serious warning sign.

Questions to ask the breeder

A serious breeder answers these questions gladly:

  1. Which genetic tests do you run? May I see the certificates?
  2. How many litters per year do you have from each bitch?
  3. Do the puppies grow up in the house or in outdoor kennels?
  4. What socialisation do the puppies receive?
  5. Do you provide support after the sale?
  6. May I see the mother and hear about her history?
  7. What health guarantees do you give?

The answers should be clear, documented and transparent.

Warning signs: when to walk away

Walk away if:

  • The price is well below the breed average — too low to cover the real costs
  • There are always puppies available, which means intensive breeding
  • Visits to the kennel are not allowed
  • The breeder does not know about the genetic tests
  • Shipping the puppy is offered
  • Puppies leave before 8 weeks of age
  • There is no pedigree, or it is "charged separately"
  • You are pressed to decide immediately
  • There is no written contract

What a puppy from a serious kennel costs

A Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy with ENCI pedigree, complete genetic testing, vaccinations, microchip and guarantees carries the price of a serious kennel, not that of an online advert. For a detailed breakdown, read how much a Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy costs.

That price reflects:

  • Genetic tests and eye examination on the breeding stock (around 800 euros for the pair)
  • Quality food for the dam and the puppies
  • Vaccinations and veterinary visits
  • Socialisation and daily care for 8 weeks and more
  • Pedigree, microchip, paperwork

Anyone selling for a few hundred euros is cutting somewhere. And that "somewhere" may cost you far more later.
