Is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier dangerous or aggressive?
No, a well-selected and socialized Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not dangerous. I've been breeding this breed for over 12 years and can guarantee that with serious character selection, early socialization and responsible owners, the Staffy is an affectionate and stable dog. Aggression depends on genetics, education and environment, not the breed.
Is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier suitable for children?
Absolutely yes. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is traditionally called "nanny dog" for its extraordinary patience with children. In our kennel we select balanced and stable characters, perfect for families. Our Staffies grow up in contact with children, naturally developing gentleness and protectiveness.
How much does a puppy with ENCI pedigree cost?
A puppy from a serious breeder with ENCI pedigree, complete genetic testing and health guarantees costs approximately €1,400 to €2,000. The price reflects years of selection, genetic testing costs (L2HGA, HC), vaccinations, microchip and quality nutrition. Be wary of prices under €1,000.
What genetic tests do you perform on breeding dogs?
All our breeding dogs are tested for: L2HGA (L-2-Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria), HC (Hereditary Cataracts) and PHPV (eye anomaly). Testing is essential to produce healthy puppies. Every puppy is sold with certificates of the parents' tests.
At what age can I take the puppy home?
Puppies are placed after 60 days of age, as required by Italian law. This period is essential: in the first 8 weeks the puppy learns from the mother the basics of canine communication and self-control. Placing earlier is illegal and harmful.
Does the Staffy get along with other dogs?
Yes, if well socialized from puppyhood. Our puppies grow up in contact with other balanced adult dogs, learning proper communication. With early and continuous socialization, the Staffy is sociable and playful. Many of our Staffies live happily with other dogs.
Difference between Staffy and Amstaff?
They are two different FCI-recognized breeds. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier (English Staffy) is smaller: males 35-40 cm at 12-17 kg. The American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff) is larger: males 43-48 cm at 25-30 kg. The Staffy maintains the "nanny dog" character perfect for families.
How long does a Staffordshire Bull Terrier live?
A well-selected Staffordshire Bull Terrier lives on average 12-14 years. It's a robust and long-lived breed. The main hereditary conditions (L2HGA, HC) are avoidable with genetic testing of breeding dogs. Our dogs often exceed 13 years.
How to recognize a serious breeder?
A serious breeder must have: original ENCI pedigree, documented genetic tests, puppies raised at home, possibility to visit and see the mother, maximum 1-2 litters/year per female, after-sales support. Be wary of those selling under €1,000 or not showing tests.
What nutrition does the Staffy need?
Balanced and controlled nutrition to maintain muscle without gaining weight. Options: high quality kibble (26-30% protein), BARF or balanced homemade diet. The Staffy is greedy: watch the extras. Ideal weight males 14-16 kg, females 11-14 kg.
Can I visit the kennel?
Absolutely yes, in fact I highly recommend it. At our kennel in Ostellato (Ferrara) I receive by appointment. You'll see the adult dogs, how the puppies live, you can verify documentation and pedigree. Be wary of those who don't allow visits.
Does the Staffy need a lot of exercise?
It's an energetic dog that needs regular but not excessive exercise: 2 daily walks (30-40 minutes), interactive games, mental activity. It's perfect for those who want an active but manageable dog, also suitable for apartment living.
Does the Staffy shed a lot?
No, it sheds very little. It has a short, smooth coat that's easy to manage. Shedding occurs mainly during seasonal molts but is very limited. Weekly brushing and baths every 2-3 months are enough.
Is it difficult to train a Staffy?
No, it's intelligent and eager to please. It responds very well to positive reinforcement: treats, food, play. It can be a bit stubborn, so gentle firmness is needed. Basic commands are learned quickly. Avoid coercive methods.
Can the Staffy live in an apartment?
Absolutely yes, it adapts perfectly. What matters is not the square meters but the quality of time together and regular outings. It's quiet, doesn't bark much, and is naturally clean. It prefers to live indoors with the family.
What is the typical Staffy character?
Extraordinary character: affectionate, loyal, courageous, patient and playful. Extremely people-oriented, loves being with family. Patient and gentle with children. Has a funny, clownish side. Intelligent and sensitive.
Does the Staffy bark a lot?
No, it's generally quiet. It only barks when there's a reason: someone at the door, a strange noise. This makes it perfect for apartments. It communicates more with body language than voice.
Can I leave the Staffy home alone?
Yes, if gradually accustomed, but not for too long. It can stay alone 4-6 hours maximum. It's very attached to family and suffers from prolonged isolation. If you work all day, consider a dog sitter.
Does the Staffy suffer from heat or cold?
It has short coat without undercoat, so it's sensitive to both. Winter: coat under 5°C. Summer: shade, fresh water, walks during cool hours. Never leave in a car in the sun. Must always sleep indoors.
How much does it cost to maintain a Staffy per year?
About €800-1,500/year: food €300-600, routine veterinary €150-250, insurance €150-300, accessories €100-150. Doesn't require expensive grooming. Considering 12-14 years of life, total cost is about €12,000-20,000.
